The government of Peru issued a statement saying that fourteen shamans in the country’s north-eastern region have been killed in the span of twenty months. The provincial prosecutor’s office alleges that these killings were ordered by Alfredo Torres, the mayor of Balsa Puerto, and carried out by his brother. Indigenous leader Roger Rumrrill claims these killings are part of a wider witch-hunt by the brothers, who are members of an unnamed protestant Christian sect.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) violence associated with logging companies is not uncommon, but evidence and testimonies collected by Greenpeace show that the Yalisika community of Bosanga was punished with exceptional violence on May 2, 2011. In a new publication "Stolen future: Conflicts and logging in Congo’s rainforests – the case of Danzer , Greenpeace today highlighted the involvement of a foreign logging company the Danzer Group, and its DRC subsidiary Siforco in exploitative human rights violations in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s forests.

A tribe in India has for the first time had their right to use their ancestral land recognized – even though it is inside a tiger reserve. In 1974 members of the Soliga tribe were evicted from their homes in the Biligirirangan Hills, Karnataka state, by a local government intent on protecting the state’s wildlife. But now the Soliga’s right to collect, use and sell forest produce from within the Rangaswami Temple Sanctuary reserve has been formally confirmed.

The role of forests in providing timber and other wood products must not overshadow their important contribution to feeding many of the world's poorest communities, a group of international forest organizations and secretariats said today. According to the FAO, forests can play an even greater role in feeding the world and helping farmers cope with climate change, but their potential to do so is not being fully realized.
